The Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic (DIC) can be taken for various reasons, each with specific implications regarding safe driving points. Here are the different reasons:

Insurance

Commercial Driver Court Required

CMC

Commercial driver (CDL) required by the court to complete a commercial vehicle operator’s clinic.

A court document stating the driver will be awarded safe driving points is required. In the absence of notification, no safe points will be awarded by DMV.

Commercial Driver DMV Required

CMD

Commercial driver (CDL) required by DMV to complete a commercial vehicle operator’s clinic.

Safe driving points are awarded.

Commercial Driver Volunteer

Commercial driver (CDL) voluntarily completes a commercial vehicle operator’s clinic.

Safe driving points are awarded.

Important Notes:

  • Court Required and DMV Required categories have specific documentation requirements for safe driving points.

  • Insurance completion does not award safe driving points, while voluntary participation does.
