The requirements vary based on age:

  • Ages 15½ to 17½: It's mandatory for you to complete three 2-hour lessons with a professional driving instructor, summing up to 6 hours in total.

    • Professional Instructor Lesson: Once you've obtained your permit, begin by enrolling in a two-hour driving lesson with a certified professional instructor.

    • Permit Endorsement: After the initial two-hour lesson, the instructor will endorse or sign the back of your permit. This validation indicates you've met the initial professional training requirement.

    • Parent-Guided Practice: With the signed permit, you can commence your 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice. This can be done under the supervision of your parents or guardians.

    • Additional Professional Lessons: Before you can acquire your driver's license, it's mandatory to undertake two more two-hour lessons with a professional instructor, ensuring you're thoroughly prepared and confident on the road.

  • Ages 17½ to 18: While professional driving lessons are not obligatory, you must practice driving with a parent, guardian, spouse, or an adult aged 25 or older who possesses a valid California driver's license. Once you turn 18, you can proceed to the DMV to undertake the driving test.

  • Age 18 and above: You're allowed to practice driving with any adult aged 18 or older who holds a valid California driver's license. Feel free to visit the DMV for the driving test whenever you're confident about passing it.

It's essential to understand the importance of Driver Training (DT). It offers a practical experience of driving in real-world scenarios. DT mandates at least six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed driving instructor. Please note, the training duration shouldn't surpass two hours daily, and observational hours inside the vehicle, watching another driver, don't count towards the 6-hour requirement.
