For those aged 15½ – 17½ years, here's a checklist of what you'll need:

  1. DL 44 - Driver License Application: Ensure you have an original and completed DL 44 form, signed by your parents or guardians. This form is available at your local DMV office or can be mailed to you upon calling 1-800-777-0133.

  2. Social Security Number: While you don't need to present the physical card, be prepared to provide your social security number.

  3. Proof of Birth Date and Legal Presence: Bring along an original or certified copy of a document like a US birth certificate, US passport, or a permanent/temporary resident card. Click here for a detailed list of accepted documents.

  4. Proof of California Residency: You'll need two proofs of residency. This can include documents like a rental agreement, mortgage bill, utility bills, etc. Ensure the address on these documents matches the address you've provided on the DL-44 application. Photocopies are acceptable. For those tracing their relationship, a birth certificate (for parents, legal guardians, or children) or a marriage license/domestic partner registration (for spouses or partners) can be used. Click here for a comprehensive list of valid residency proofs.

  5. Application Fee: A fee of $34 is required. This covers the costs of up to three exams within a 12-month span and includes the costs for both your permit and driver license. Remember, if you don't get your license within these 12 months, you'll need to begin the application process anew.

  6. Certificate of Completion of Driver Education: After concluding your Aceable course, we'll mail this certificate to you.
